Jamie O’Hara believes that Tottenham were “lucky” that their winning goal stood against Manchester United.
Spurs beat the Red Devils to progress to the semi-finals of the EFL Cup on Thursday (19 December) at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The Lilywhites were 3-0 up in the 46th minute but conceded two goals before Son Heung-Min scored directly from a corner to secure victory.
However, speaking on talkSPORT after the contest [19 December, 22:16]O’Hara admitted that his former club got away with one, saying: “It was lucky that Son gets a lucky one from the corner, it goes in. But it’s a foul. Bergvall fouls the keeper. You can argue he should do better, but it’s a foul.”
No VAR rescues Tottenham
There was no VAR in the contest because it is only used from the semi-finals onwards in the EFL Cup.
The EFL do not want lower-league clubs to have a disadvantage in the earlier rounds because many of their stadiums do not have VAR installed.
Had the technology been used in the contest, the winning goal would have probably been ruled out.
Former PGMOL chief Keith Hackett told Tottenham News that he believes that the incident will warrant an investigation by the Football Association.
It remains to be seen whether that is the case but the United goalkeeper was not strong enough and the contact from Bergvall was not excessive.
Ange Postecoglou was relaxed in his media duties following the victory, however, he will be furious with how his team nearly allowed the opposition back into the contest.
In other Tottenham news, the club are anticipating January transfer approaches for one player who also started on Thursday.
