On the sidelines of the Mazan rape trial, tensions broke out between the activists and one of the lawyers, Maître Christophe Bruschi. Faced with a crowd disappointed with the sentences handed down, the lawyer preferred to provoke the gathered activists.
After 64 days of hearings and fifteen weeks of trial, the court had to rule on the decisions taken against the 51 men accused of aggravated rape and sexual assault, committed over ten years, at the home of Dominique and Gisèle Pelicot , in Mazan, near Carpentras. 41 of Mazan’s 51 defendants will be incarcerated today.
Among them, Joseph C., sentenced to three years in prison, two of which were suspended for assault and non-aggravated rape. However, the latter is one of the accused who emerges free after serving pre-trial detention. His lawyer, Me Christophe Bruschi, caused tensions when leaving court.
“The message is shit! But with a smile”
The lawyer leaves the court with the following words: “My client is free!” “I have a message from my client to all these hysterical and foul-mouthed people. The message is shit! But with a smile! Come on, knitters!” he continues.
Faced with a smiling lawyer, activists replied: “Shame on you, you are a shame for the world and France”. In front of the press, Me Christophe Bruschi, declares “We are here to provoke and provoke debate”, before concluding “I did my job. You find it normal that these people ask for 20 years for everyone when most of the people, apart from the husband, are poor people.”
One of the accused, who also emerged from the court free, was attacked by the demonstrators, disappointed with the sentences handed down which were lower than those requested by the prosecution, except for Dominique Pélicot, when he left the court.
