The Vaucluse criminal court sentenced Dominique Pelicot to the maximum sentence of 20 years of criminal imprisonment this Thursday, December 19 for aggravated rape and attempted rape of his ex-wife.
Me Béatrice Zavarro, Dominique Pelicot’s lawyer, reacted for the first time after her client’s 20-year prison sentence for aggravated rape and attempted rape against his ex-wife Gisèle Pelicot, assuring that Dominique Pelicot “took note” of the decision of the Vaucluse criminal court, this Thursday, December 19.
“We will take advantage of the 10-day period to find out whether we are appealing this decision. As I speak to you, no decision has been taken from this point of view,” said the lawyer.
Me Béatrice Zavarro clarified that her client was “a little dazed” regarding the security period at two-thirds of the sentence which was pronounced against him.
An “assumed responsibility” from Dominique Pelicot
“I wanted at the start of the debates for the debates to be calm, they were and this is a good thing for matters of justice”, also welcomed Me Béatrice Zavarro.
“I wanted Ms. Pelicot to be able to emerge peacefully from these debates, I think that the verdicts which were pronounced will contribute to this appeasement,” she wants to believe.
“For the moment, we are within the framework of an assumed responsibility of Dominique Pelicot, of a dignity of Ms. Pelicot,” estimated Dominique Pelicot’s lawyer.
A “difference” made between Pelicot and the other accused
“I said at the start of the debates that Mr. Pelicot was not necessarily the conductor and the others were not the musicians. However, I think that the court condemned the conductor by making a difference between him and the various musicians, of which act”, also regretted the lawyer, emphasizing the difference in the sentences pronounced against Dominique Pelicot on the one hand and that pronounced against the other accused.
The Vaucluse criminal court on Thursday found the 51 accused in the Mazan rape trial guilty and handed down sentences ranging from three years in prison to the maximum sentence of 20 years in prison for Dominique Pelicot.
The magistrates followed the indictment of the prosecution, which had demanded that none of them be acquitted. However, they imposed sentences lower than those requested by the public prosecutor, with the exception of that imposed on Dominique Pelicot.
