Situation

A strong episode of mistral and tramontane sets in in the Mediterranean between the end of the day of this Thursday and Friday evening, requiring a YELLOW level alert by our services. This strong wind is caused by the arrival of cold and dynamic air at altitude, with a tightening of the gradient upon arriving in the respective areas of tramontane and mistral.

The tramontane sets in first, with gusts of up to 90-100 km/h on Roussillon, 120 km/h on the relief. For the mistral, gusts can exceed 100 to 110 km/h in the mouth of the Rhône, in Camargue, then on Corsica.

At the peak of the episode, particularly in the morning of this Friday, the gusts could locally reach 120 to 130 km/h, up to 150 km/h on Cap Corse.

Observation

The event has not yet started.

Evolution

Thursday afternoon and evening

The tramontane rises suddenly in its domain at the end of the afternoon, with gusts quickly exceeding 80-90 km/h. On the terrain and Cap Béar, the wind blows at more than 100 km/h.
At the same time, the mistral also begins to blow, but later in the evening, after 9-10 p.m. in its domain. It is in Provence that we expect the strongest winds, around 90 to 100 km/h.

Night from Thursday to Friday

Mistral and tramontane settle throughout the night across the entire Gulf of Lion. The wind is clearly strengthening in Corsica, initially affecting the terrain with gusts exceeding 130 km/h.

Friday morning

A further strengthening of the wind is expected, particularly in Bouches-du-Rhône and Corsica, with peaks exceeding 120 to 130 km/h, very locally 150 km/h on Cap Corse.

Friday afternoon

The wind begins to gradually ease, although gusts can still exceed 100 km/h. At the end of the day, the gradient eases and the wind is expected to be less strong, no longer exceeding our press release thresholds.
