Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma was forced off in the first half of his side’s Ligue 1 fixture against Monaco on Wednesday after sustaining a serious facial injury.

The 25-year-old Italy international was struck in the face by the studs of Monaco defender Wilfried Singo’s boot after saving his effort on goal.

Donnarumma immediately received medical attention on the Stade Louis II pitch and was replaced after 22 minutes by Matvei Safonov.

Singo, who had been booked earlier in the first half, quickly apologised but escaped further punishment from referee Francois Letexier for the challenge.

Donnarumma walked off the field accompanied by medical staff and was pictured with a significantly bloodied face.

A PSG statement at half time read: “Sending our best wishes to Gigio, who suffered a serious facial injury and had to leave the match in the first half.”

Donnarumma has made 15 appearances in all competitions for PSG this season, keeping four clean sheets.

Monaco twice came from behind during Wednesday’s Ligue 1 fixture before two late goals from Goncalo Ramos and Ousmane Dembele secured a 4-2 victory for PSG.

The win extends Luis Enrique’s side’s lead at the top of Ligue 1 to 10 points.
