Saints legend Francis Benali lauds ‘wonderful’ Liverpool star after what he did vs Southampton

Liverpool travelled down to the English south coast to face Premier League cellar dwellers Southampton, with the Reds in full control at half-time.

Darwin Nunez and Harvey Elliott were both on the scoresheet as Liverpool went into the break with a healthy 2-0 lead, with a managerless Southampton failing to do much to worry the visitors despite a highly rotated XI.

With Federico Chiesa in the matchday squad for Liverpool, there’s a good chance that the Reds will be able to give a number of fringe players valuable minutes as we head into the final fixtures of the hectic winter schedule.

And Southampton legend Francis Benali was impressed by one Liverpool player in particular this evening.

Trent Alexander-Arnold lauded after Darwin Nunez assist

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra coverage of the match, the pundit was full of praise for Trent Alexander-Arnold, who assisted Nunez after some excellent play from the England international before a deflected pass found its way to the Liverpool no. 9.

The 26-year-old fullback started at left-back with Andy Robertson suspended and Kostas Tsimikas starting the match on the bench, with the Greek international finally back to full fitness after a few weeks out injured.

Yet despite playing in an unfamiliar position, Alexander-Arnold more than impressed for Liverpool, with Benali praising the England international for his work in Nunez’s opener, with the pundit saying: “It’s a wonderful piece of football from Trent Alexander-Arnold.

“He had two players around him, but gets past both of them and drives forward before clipping the ball over to Darwin Nunez. Nunez does well to keep his composure and he just tucks it home. There was only one outcomes once Alex McCarthy slipped.”

What’s the latest on Alexander-Arnold’s future?

Alexander-Arnold has been one of Liverpool’s best players this season, with the England international thriving under Arne Slot in a more traditional right-back role down the flank.

Yet Alexander-Arnold’s future remains a big talking point, with Real Madrid still the leading side to sign the 26-year-old fullback as the defender looks more and more likely to leave Liverpool by the day.

Indeed, Liverpool have a mission on their hands in 2025 in replacing Alexander-Arnold, and today’s performance against Southampton has showed just how good the defender can be when it full song.
