In the wake of The Best awards ceremony awarded on Tuesday evening, FIFA revealed the details of the votes. We learn in particular that Didier Deschamps did not opt for Kylian Mbappé as number one.
Kylian Mbappé was unable to take advantage of The Best awards to put his head back on track. In recent weeks, even if the number 9 of Real Madrid has notably scored against Girona and Atalanta Bergamo, he continues to make the news, criticized for a level of play below expectations and especially his status. On the occasion of The Best award for male player of the year, he saw his teammate at Real Madrid, Vinicius, triumph with a total of 48 points, ahead of Rodri, the recent Ballon d’Or (43 points), and Jude Bellingham (37 points). Kylian Mbappé had to settle for 9th place with 14 points collected after the votes of journalists, selectors and captains of all the men’s national teams (or almost).
Presumably, Mbappé did not vote
In the details of the votes revealed by FIFA on Tuesday evening, we notably have access to the vote of Didier Deschamps who, unlike many of his counterparts – Lionel Scaloni in favor of Lionel Messi or Lee Carsley of Jude Bellingham – highlighted before a player other than his leader. Thus, the national coach voted for Vinicius as number one, ahead of his captain Kylian Mbappé and Rodri.
This will certainly not fail to get people talking given recent news, and the absence of Kylian Mbappé during the last two gatherings of the France team. Concerning his absence in November, he spoke on Canal+ and the show Clique. “We both discussed it. He said it at a press conference, there were two of us. If it comes out, he knows where it comes from… He doesn’t want it to be known and I totally respect it. “He’s the boss. If one day he wants to talk about it… In any case, I wanted to go but I can’t say why.” As captain of the Blues, Mbappé, had to vote but obviously, this was not the case because he does not appear on the list of captains even though he was excluded from the eleven of the year in the register offensive with the acclaimed trio Erling Haaland, Lamine Yamal and Vinicius.
