Abolishing the imputed rental value surprisingly clears another hurdle
The Council of States has agreed to the National Council to implement a complete system change Abolition of imputed rental value to initiate. For the first time, the Federal Office for the Environment has published findings on… Occurrence of trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) presented. The pollutant is present in groundwater throughout Switzerland. Particularly high concentrations were found in agricultural areas and in northwestern Switzerland. The chemical comes primarily from pesticides and industrial wastewater. While the EU is already planning measures against TFA, there are still no bans in Switzerland. Environmentalists are urgently calling for stricter testing and bans on such substances.
Arsenic discovered in the rock – Uri has a problem with the second Gotthard tube
At the Arsenic was discovered during drilling of the second Gotthard tube in the rock. The plan to dump around 3.5 million tons of material into Lake Lucerne had to be stopped by the canton of Uri. However, 3,000 tons have already been sunk into the lake, which was originally intended to support the renaturation of the Reuss Delta. The affected rubble will now be used for the planned Airolo village park.
Raiffeisen Switzerland boss Heinz Huber unexpectedly resigns
Heinz Huber is leaving Raiffeisen Switzerland End of year. The Raiffeisen boss is set to become President of the Graubündner Kantonalbank in July 2025. Christian Poerschke will take over his duties on an interim basis from January 2025. Under Huber, sales at Switzerland’s second-largest bank grew by 15 percent to 4.1 billion francs last year, and profits rose to 1.39 billion (+17.7 percent). Graubündner Kantonalbank is planning a change as President Peter Fanconi resigns.
France’s ex-president Sarkozy has to serve a prison sentence with an ankle bracelet
France’s former president Nicolas Sarkozy is on corruption charges was legally sentenced to wear an electronic ankle bracelet for one year. It is the first time that a former president in France has been sentenced to a prison sentence without parole. Sarkozy declared that he would accept the punishment, but at the same time wanted to appeal to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). Sarkozy’s sentence includes a total of three years in prison, two of which are suspended. Sarkozy is also banned from running in elections for three years. A possible procedure before the ECHR would have no suspensive effect on the penalties.
Giorgio Contini signs with Young Boys until 2027
The YB trainer search is completed: Giorgio Contini will coach the Bernese team from December 28th. He succeeds Joël Magnin. The 50-year-old has signed a contract with Young Boys until 2027. This marks the beginning of the fifth stop in Swiss elite club football for the Winterthur native. The job in Bern is a career highlight for him, for the first time he has a realistic chance of winning titles with a team, even if that applies to the cup this season with YB in 9th place and 8 points behind leader Lugano. Contini was previously employed as an assistant to national coach Murat Yakin.

Death in the swimming pool: Streifli the cat’s case ends up in court
Streifli the cat drowned painfully in a pool around four years ago. His former owner is said to be to blame for this.
