France Gaz pleads for a plural and realistic strategy

As part of the national Energy-Climate consultation (SNBC/PPE), Gaz warns against massive electrification which would underestimate the key role of the gas system in the energy transition. The union is calling for a plural energy strategy, combining energy efficiency, renewable gases and energy complementarity.

France Gaz continues to call for better recognition of green gases. Following on from a column published at the end of November, the association has just published its response to the public consultation opened by the State on the Multi-Annual Energy Program (PPE) and the National Low-Carbon Strategy (SNBC).

« France’s energy policy must reflect the plurality of the mix and the real dynamism of the renewable gas sector » underlines France Gaz, which recalls that carbon neutrality in 2050 will require a wide range of carbon-free energies.

More ambitious targets for green gases

To achieve this objective, the sector is proposing an ambitious trajectory for renewable gases, with production estimated at 60 TWh in 2030, or 20% of consumption, which includes 11 TWh of production linked to “new sectors” such as pyrogasification. hydrothermal gasification and power-to-methane. In its version currently under consultation, the PPE sets a target of 50 TWh for 2030.

“France must succeed in its energy transition by continuing its sobriety efforts, decarbonizing its energy mix, preserving purchasing power and competitiveness, and guaranteeing security of supply. An efficient and competitive energy mix must be plural by including all low-carbon and renewable solutions” underlined Frédéric Martin, president of France Gaz.

A legislative and regulatory framework to adapt

To ensure that the objectives are achieved, France Gaz calls for guaranteeing stakeholders in the sector an appropriate legislative and regulatory framework. Among the measures proposed, that of the implementation of the Incentive for the Reduction of the Carbon Intensity of Fuels (IRRIC, new name of Tiruert) from 2026 to encourage distributors to increase the share of low-carbon fuels in their sales. A lever that would make it possible to lower the price of bioNGV at the pump, thereby increasing its appeal and consumption.
