François Bayrou already under fire from critics

François Bayrou, during the question session with the Prime Minister, at the National Assembly, December 17, 2024. Behind him, his chief of staff, Nicolas Pernot, and his special advisor, Eric Thiers. JULIEN MUGUET FOR “THE WORLD”

More than twelve years have passed since the last appearance of François Bayrou in the Hemicycle of the Palais-Bourbon, in the spring of 2012. The president of the MoDem, at the time a non-registered deputy for Pyrénées-Atlantiques, broke his ban with the Sarkozy right, then sat at the top, in the last row, next to his colleague Jean Lassalle. For more than an hour and without notes, the Prime Minister defended himself against the eleven parliamentary groups of the National Assembly, invited to question him in turn.

As if nothing important ever happened to others, François Bayrou’s first words are… to himself. At the opening of a session crushed by the drama of the Mahorais, prey to a humanitarian disaster since the passage of Cyclone Chido on Mayotte on December 14, the Prime Minister marked a silence, before expressing his “emotion”, “because it has been a long time since I spoke in this assembly, which I really liked”, he whispers.
