Could the bird be building its nest little by little? While the elections for the office of the Chamber of Agriculture of Haute-Garonne, scheduled between January 15 and 31, 2025, are approaching, a new list has just appeared. Jérôme Bayleleader of the revolt of farmers in Haute-Garonnesubmitted a list called “United for our future”, via its association of Ultras of the A64.
A list of 20 A64 Ultras farmers
18 farmers and two substitutes found their place there to face the Peasant Confederation, the FDSEA/JA, and the Rural Coordination.
“It’s a non-union list, but we have unionized farmers, who come from the Rural Coordination or the Young Farmers, because we are not against the unions. We have to work with them,” presents Jérôme Bayle. Moreover, “if we are elected, we will offer a position to each opposing list in the office,” he promises.
He, on the other hand, will not be part of it. He is already not among the running mates. But for what reason? What is the strategy of the “star” farmer of Haute-Garonne?
Why will Jérôme Bayle not be on the list?
The one who flooded television screens, hit the headlines with the farmers’ blockade in Carbonne, and coordinated the Franco-Spanish blockade at the border, wants to raise his voice in his own way. “I want to keep my freedom,” says Jérôme Bayle. But above all: the Volvestre farmer intends to maintain his aura among the political class and the media.
Because its media weight can be used.
I am consulted by people of all political parties. I went to Paris three weeks ago, I met Annie Genevard (former Minister of Agriculture, editor’s note), I spoke with Gérard Larcher (president of the Senate, editor’s note)… I can have a role of lobbyist with politicians.
However, putting a finger in the gears of the Chamber of Agriculture would deprive it of its “media freedom of speech”, believes Jérôme Bayle. “It’s a plus that the voice and issues of the department have been raised. »
The projects of the Ultras of the A64 at the Chamber of Agriculture
And this is where the farmer intervenes, and where his association participates in this vast project. With his 420 members, the Ultras of the A64 hope to take control of the Chamber of Agriculture of Haute-Garonne to convert it into a “farmers’ house”.
“We want to unite farmers, revitalize the Chamber. We want to change what didn’t work by relying on the feedback of former elected officials,” assures Jérôme Bayle. Among the big files: the breeding service in which “we have lost a lot of skills” or even the essential issue of water management “that we must anticipate more”.
Problems to which, together, farmers and union members could generate ideas. But to transform them into large-scale solutions, we must target the State (or even the European Union). However, “the Chamber of Agriculture is consular. The administration relies on it, but it does not play the role of a union or a lobby.” This could well, in the event of winning elections, be endorsed by Jérôme Bayle.
Contacted by Actu Toulouse, the president of the Chamber of Agriculture did not wish to react to the subject of this list.
Elections to the Chamber of Agriculture: what you need to know
33 elected officials make up the Chamber of Agriculture for a period of six years. In 2019, half of the 4,500 farmers in Haute-Garonne abstained in the elections won by the JA and FDSEA list, followed by the Peasant Confederation and Rural Coordination. Half of the seats (+1) go to the list which comes in first position in the ballot.
