Saddening news came from Russia just hours ago. One of Latvia’s most capped Basketball players Janis Timma was found dead in Moscow. The former Magic forward, only aged 32 had only recently moved to Moscow to play 3×3 basketball. Sadly, his battle with emotions is said to be the reason for his untimely demise. And the news is only just beginning to hit some of his teammates, including countryman Kristaps Porzingis.
In the wake of such devastating news, the Celtics center sent a cryptic message on his social media. He wrote “Ludzu let go of you” on a blocked-out screen on his Instagram stories. Translating to ‘please say no’, Porzingis is clearly shaken by the tragic news of his former teammate passing away.
According to reports from Moscow, the cause of Janis Timma’s death is still under investigation, with early reports suggesting that it may have been a suicide. This comes just a week after the Latvian player and Ukrainian singer Anna Sedokova officially finalized their divorce. Timma had openly shared his struggles with emotional distress, and his mental health challenges were something he spoke about publicly on social media.

Kristaps Porzingis and Janis Timma as teammates
Kristaps Porzingis last played for the Latvian team in 2021. However, even though injuries derailed his participation, the towering center always considered it an honor to play for his nation. And a close teammate of his was Janis Timma. Their most memorable time came during the 2017 EuroBasket tournament.
The two as spearheads led the team to an appearance in the quarterfinals where they lost to the champions Slovenia. It was the best position Latvia has achieved in the competition to date. Timma averaged a stellar 14.3 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 4 assists during the seven games, while Porzingis tallied 23.6 points per game.
