A match that had everything except goals. Both Beerschot and Standard made it a fun match, but unfortunately it ended without a winner.
In the last five games, Beerschot could not score a single point against Standard. They didn’t even score, but it was soon clear that the home team wanted to change this.
Flashy start from Beerschot
Beerschot’s game plan quickly became clear. Play the ball very quickly over Standard’s defense to create space. Charly Keita was released three times in the first five minutes of the match. However, the attacker did not score.
It rained chances for Beerschot in the first half. Thibaut Verlinden, but also Colin Dagba, were very close to the opening goal. However, there was a very strong Matthieu Epolo in goal for Standard.
Very strong Matthieu Epolo
Despite the fact that there were opportunities for Beerschot, Matthieu Epolo was the standout player in the first half. The Standard goalkeeper played a very strong match. He single-handedly kept his team on track with a number of fabulous saves.
Despite the many opportunities, there was surprisingly a brilliant score on the board
Standard dominated in the rain
During the first half it started to rain and the cold drops inspired Standard. The visitors came out of the dressing room strong and dominated the second half. However, they did not create any real big opportunities.
In the first half Epolo had to make a number of good saves to keep his team on track. Nick Shinton didn’t have to pull this off his sleeve. Beerschot’s goalkeeper made several good interventions, but did not have to make any miracle saves to keep his nets clean.
A pressing final quarter
Beerschot systematically took back control. It was Marwan Al-Sahafi and Thibaud Verlinden who were the most dangerous. Once again it was Matthieu Epolo who kept his team straight. The Standard goalkeeper was the absolute standout for the people of Liège.
Despite the many chances and nice football, the match still ended with a score against zero on the board.
