Union Berlin: Fan scandal, referee interrupts the game

Union Berlin really wanted to end the negative series of the last few weeks in the home game against bottom of the table VfL Bochum. But the game ultimately descended into chaos. A Union Berlin fan was to blame.

Union Berlin: Game before cancellation

What had happened? The game actually started well for Union Berlin. The guest from Bochum weakened themselves early on. Koji Miyoshi was shown red for an overly hard entry against Andras Schäfer. But it was Bochum who then took the lead through Ibrahima Sissoko. Despite being overweight, Union only managed to equalize through Benedict Hollerbach.

Bochum defended the away point with everything they had. And then came the second minute of added time. First Bochum keeper Patrick Drewes was shown a yellow card for time play, then the inglorious situation arose. A lighter flew from the Union Berlin fan block towards the Bochum keeper and hit him in the head. Drewes went down and referee Martin Petersen stopped the game.

Drewes was taken off the field by supervisors, apparently in a daze. The referee team and the VfL kickers also went into the dressing room. The Union Berlin players initially stood a bit perplexed on the sidelines, but later followed them into the dressing room.

Apparently there was discussion there as to whether the game would continue. After a twenty-minute break, the teams came back onto the pitch, but without keeper Drewes. Striker Philipp Hofmann took over the job in the Bochum goal. However, Hofmann did not have to intervene. In the catacombs of the Alte Försterei in Berlin, both teams had apparently agreed to play down the time together.

At Union Berlin, the sporting crisis after the inglorious 1-1 draw against VfL Bochum is now joined by a fan crisis. Throwing a lighter will definitely have repercussions.
