ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) – A St. Louis man is criminally charged after police say he crashed into a taxicab, robbed and assaulted the driver, attempted to carjack another motorist and assaulted an arresting officer who arrived at the scene early Wednesday in Berkeley.
St. Louis County prosecutors have charged 26-year-old Cornell Woolfolk with first-degree robbery, first-degree assault, and first-degree vehicle hijacking, all class A felonies. He is also charged with three counts of armed criminal action, unlawful possession of a firearm and misdemeanor assault on a Berkeley police officer.
Woolfolk is confined in the St. Louis County Jail. Bond information was not immediately available.
First Alert 4 was at the crash scene, reported around 1:55 a.m. on Natural Bridge Road near Interstate 70 in Berkeley.
According to a Berkeley Police probable cause statement, officers responded and found the taxicab upside down in the middle of the road.
Woolfolk, who police said showed signs of intoxication, then approached the taxi driver and asked for a ride before placing a gun against the driver’s head and demanding his money, according to the statement. He then allegedly struck the taxi driver in the head with the firearm.
When another driver arrived at the scene, police said Woolfolk tried to force at gunpoint that person to hand over the keys to their vehicle. As police arrived, he attempted to flee the scene and began struggling with officers, according to the statement.
After being placed in handcuffs, Woolfolk is accused of assaulting one of the officers by grabbing their genitals and twisting, police said in the statement.
