Taylor Swift was the most streamed artist globally on Spotify in 2024, while Joe Rogan and Alex Cooper topped the platform’s podcast charts.
This is the fifth consecutive year The Joe Rogan Experience has been the top podcast on Spotify and comes after he interviewed former President Donald Trump on his show leading up to the election. Cooper, who hosts Call Her Daddy, interviewed Vice President Kamala Harris on her show and took the second place slot for the second year in a row.
Notably, the two podcasts still topped the list after Spotify ceded exclusivity of both titles. The top five podcasts globally also included Huberman Lab and This Past Weekend w/Theo Von in the third and fourth spots and The Diary of A CEO with Steven Bartletta British video podcast, in the fifth spot.
While the top four are well-known titles, Jordan Newman, Spotify’s head of content partnerships, said the popularity of The Diary of A CEO speaks to the increasing globalization of podcasts, propelled by video.
“I think there are a lot of new podcasts launched today that start with video,” Newman told The Hollywood Reporter. “It definitely feels like it’s becoming an endemic part of the podcast industry for the right podcast that can support that sort of creative format.”
This is the second year in a row Swift has topped the music list, with 26.6 billion streams globally, and her domination this year came after the release of her album, The Tortured Poets Department, in April, which was also the most streamed album globally on Spotify in 2024, and amid her Eras Tour. The top five artists list was rounded out by The Weeknd, Bad Bunny, Drake and Billie Eilish. Sabrina Carpenter had the most streamed song globally with “Espresso,” which had more than 1.6 billion streams.
For the first time, Spotify included a ranking of top audiobooks on the platform, after introducing the offering in 2022 and then expanding it in November 2023 by offering 15 free hours of audiobook listening to premium members in the U.S. and select other countries. A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas claimed the top spot, followed by The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien, I’m Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy, A Court of Mist and Furyanother book in the series by Maas, and It Ends with Us by Colleen Hoover.
Sci-Fi and Fantasy were the most popular audiobook genres in the U.S., followed by romance. The platform also saw large spikes in listening related to book-to-screen adaptations, with Wicked (which had a 1,400 percent increase post premiere weekend)It Ends with Us (with a 200 percent increase post premiere weekend and 570 percent for Hoover’s entire catalog on Spotify) and Bridgerton (which had a 143 percent increase post premiere).
Part of the trends toward book-to-screen titles comes as Spotify works in partnership with movie studios to promote titles on the platform, said Rebecca McGuire, Spotify’s manager of audiobook partnerships and licensing. But the most popular titles and genres also speak to the userbase on the platform.
“Generally speaking, the Spotify demographic is a bit younger,” McGuire said. “So I think we’re kind of in the sweet spot of that romantsy [romance and fantasy] that we’re seeing really translate,”
Spotify did not make audiobook listening lists for individual users this year, but is offering authors, as well as podcast creators and other artists, access to data about listener demographics and habits on the platform.
For the first year, Spotify will also be offering users an AI-generated podcast, built with Google’s NotebookLM, which offers an audio overview of the user’s personal music listening habits to those in the U.S., the U.K., Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Ireland and Sweden.
