Director Noémie Verlant wanted to humanize women in her new film.
CINEMA – Feminism is also a matter of details. In Women on the balcony which will be released on Wednesday December 11, Noémie Merlant, who also plays one of the characters, describes the daily life of three women sharing accommodation in Marseille, who begin to fantasize about their mysterious neighbor, before the sequel turns into a terrifying comedy. In this film with resolutely feminist influences, the director chose to represent the main characters' farts, going against the injunction of the perfect woman.
“I wanted to break the mystery of Marylin (Monroe) a little by freeing her through the prout”, explained Noémie Merlant on the set of Daily on TMC this Tuesday December 3. One of the three roommates, Élise, is in fact inspired by the Hollywood star, established as the figure of the object woman, always pleasant in the eyes of men, the archetype of the femme fatale and seductress, “something that makes you fantasize”.
But in Les' version Women on the balconythe latter evolves over the course of the film, frees itself from this shackles and then only continues to fart, scream or fall in public places, as the plot plunges into horror and the sorority gives itself to have. A way to stop objectifying women for Noémie Merlant.
Humanize women
“Vulgarity is much more often attributed to men and accepted for men, asserts the director to justify her approach. Among women, it's always more complicated to accept this vulgarity when frankly among us we are all just as vulgar. »
“I wanted to use vulgarity to break this glossy image, to make these women human above all, less mysterious and less sexualized”concludes Noémie Merlant, who was inspired by her own experience of sharing accommodation with other women for the film.
