Neuer and Eberl struggle with the decision – Nagelsmann finds red “undisputable”
A decision with which the “culprit” and his boss did not completely agree, but which they accepted with gritted teeth. “It’s not a situation in which I’m trying to hurt him. The problem is that I don’t touch the ball, he runs into me and accepts it gratefully,” said a visibly disappointed newcomer Sky. “In the end it’s okay.”
Unlike Neuer, Bayern sports director Max Eberl had a brief exchange with the referee after the end of the game. “Mr. Osmers said that it was an emergency brake for him. We have to accept that,” said Eberl. “When a goalkeeper comes out, he has to have the ball. He hesitated for a moment, so he comes a little too late. There are still two of our players around, but the referee decided it that way.”
For national coach Julian Nagelsmann, the expulsion was “undisputed.” The ex-Bayern coach saw the cause of the collision and its consequences as Neuer’s unfortunate timing, although he admitted that it was “always a millimeter decision”.
“Mastery of space is Manu’s great strength,” said Nagelsmann at the ARD. “In that case it might have been better to wait. But hindsight is always wiser.”
