Defending champion Bayer Leverkusen won the DFB Cup against record cup winners Bayern Munich 1-0 (0-0) and thus reached the quarter-finals. Nathan Tella scores the only goal of the game for the defending champions after Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was shown a red card after just 16 minutes of play. Werder Bremen won 1-0 (0-0) against second division team SV Darmstadt 98 with a goal in added time and also moved into the round of the last eight teams.

FC Bayern, who had to do without top striker Harry Kane, found themselves outnumbered early in the game. Manuel Neuer illegally stopped Jeremie Frimpong outside the penalty area. Referee Harm Osmers showed the Bayern captain the red card (17th). Bayern coach Vincent Kompany had to make changes early on and substituted goalkeeper Daniel Peretz for Leroy Sané.

Tella strikes for Leverkusen

The first big chance for Leverkusen was Frimpong, who was denied by substitute Daniel Peretz after a pass from Florian Wirtz (32′). The hosts also played forward with one outfield player less confidently. Coman put a header just over the goal in the opponent’s six-yard box (34′).

Patrick Schick, who came on as a substitute at half-time, had to leave the pitch after just under a quarter of an hour due to an injury. Nathan Tella came on for the Czech and scored Bayer’s lead eight minutes after coming on (69′). Despite all their efforts, the hosts were unable to develop a goal threat after falling behind when they were outnumbered. In stoppage time, Frimpong, whose shot hit the crossbar, missed the preliminary decision.

Bremen with Lucky Punch in stoppage time

Second division team SV Darmstadt 98 held up well for a long time and stopped the offensive attempts of the guests from Bremen. Former Werder coach Florian Kohfeldt’s team defended passionately and relied on counter-attacking football. Werder’s Jens Stage failed with Bremen’s best opportunity of the first half from a distance (39′).

The Bundesliga team started the second half with a powerful phase. However, Ducksch and Schmid were unable to capitalize on a double chance (47′). It wasn’t until injury time that Bremen scored the decisive goal for a home win. Anthony Jung pushed Ducksch’s free kick into the net and secured late success for the favorite.
