Tomorrow evening, RTL tvi will broadcast the new series where Jean Dujardin dons the famous Zorro mask. A role full of emotion for the actor, who admits to having dreamed of this character since his childhood.
Jean Dujardin admits: playing Zorro is much more than a role, it’s a return to his childhood games. “We often talk about a childhood dream… I didn’t hope to be Zorro, I was Zorro”he confides with a smile. “When you’re an actor, you throw ideas into the air without really thinking that one day they will come to fruition. And it turns out that Marc Dujardin, my brother, gave me this very nice gift almost 40 years later. ‘watched playing in the garden’.
However, the actor was not content to relive nostalgia. This new adaptation aims to be innovative, mixing action, comedy and romance. With a touch of humor which, according to Dujardin, was essential: “We mainly stuck to very serious themes with societal and historical themes. We try to have very serious sequences, but to put comedy in them. It’s the reactions that make us laugh. In fact, it’s is sometimes the very cruelty that certain characters have”.
The magic of the costume
Putting on the Zorro mask was an emotional moment. “I especially looked at the team and the childish looks of some, the intimidated looks of others. There is something intimidating, something that inevitably calls us back to our childhood. Everyone has their Zorro”confides the actor
However, it wasn’t enough for the actor to look like Zorro. It was also necessary to bring a legendary character back to life while giving him a personal touch. “You won’t necessarily get the Zorro you knew as a child, but you still have another offer”he warns. “IThere will still be perfumes that recall things from the 60s, but it’s also good to innovate.”.
The series, which combines spectacular action scenes, fine humor and strong themes, was not easy to film. Jean Dujardin, true to himself, insisted on performing the majority of the stunts. “I did 95% of the stunts, the sword and horse fights, because it’s more fun! It’s now or never, in 10 years it will be too late”.
And after Zorro?
After Zorro, Jean Dujardin remains open to new projects. If he does not hide his desire to take on a historical role, like Henry IV, he prefers to take his time. “I realized that by rushing, it wasn’t necessarily the right choice and that you were living less well. So it’s good to have no’s in order to have real yes’s like I’ve always done. “.
In the meantime, his incarnation of Zorro promises to make an impression. A series to discover tomorrow at 8:30 p.m. on RTL tvi and streaming on RTL play.
