IThere will be a maximum of 332 deputies, but probably in reality a little less. This Wednesday, December 4, from 4 p.m., the future of Michel Barnier will be decided at Matignon. While the Prime Minister has held his government accountable by drawing out Article 49.3 of the Constitution for his Social Security financing bill, he will have to face two motions of censure, tabled by the New Popular Front ( NFP) and the National Rally (RN).

The two motions were tabled Monday, December 2 by the two groups. In that of the NFP, presented by the presidents of the four groups which make up this alliance, only a few names are missing from the signature. Seven, more precisely: the socialists Gérard Leseul, Sophie Pantel, Dominique Potier, Valérie Rossi and Hervé Saulignac, as well as Yannick Monnet and Emmanuel Tjibaou (first Kanak independence MP since 1986), from the Democratic and Republican Left (GDR) group.

At France Bleu Gard Lozère, Monday December 2, Sophie Pantel, MP for Lozère, explained her decision: “As a matter of responsibility, I choose not to support an ineffective motion of censure in this context. Current issues require realistic and constructive solutions rather than symbolic gestures which risk aggravating the current crises. »

His PS colleague Gérard Leseul has, at this time, not given any justification for his lack of signature, even if he affirmed on November 28 on X that “the government has created the conditions for its own censorship”. GDR MP Yannick Monnet made the distinction between the vote and the signing of the motion of censure: “They are two different things,” he clarified. “If things remain as they are, I will vote for the motion of censure. I still hold out hope that the Prime Minister will change direction,” admitted the Allier MP.

And, on the side of the National Rally, who negotiated all weekend with the Prime Minister? In addition to having announced that it would vote for the NFP, the party should vote as one for its own motion of censure, presented by Marine Le Pen and Éric Ciotti, president of the Union of Rights for the Republic (UDR) group. and ally of the far-right party. All of their deputies signed the motion.
By adding their votes (140) to those of the NFP deputies (192), we reach 332 votes in favor of censure. Largely enough for the absolute majority (289 deputies) which would bring down the government.
And this, even without the votes of the Liot deputies, who announced that they would not vote for any of the motions. The seven non-signatory deputies will therefore have little weight in the balance. And will not be enough to save Michel Barnier whose hours at Matignon are perhaps numbered.
