Michel Barnier's days as Prime Minister are numbered after the filing of motions of censure from LFI and the RN. Emmanuel Macron must therefore start to think about the aftermath of Michel Barnier and the first names are starting to circulate.
This Wednesday, December 4, the two motions of censure filed by the RN and LFI will be voted on. If one of them is adopted, the entire government will fall with Michel Barnier. While waiting for the votes, Emmanuel Macron, currently visiting Saudi Arabia, is already starting to prospect to find his next Prime Minister.
According to RTL, “he’s already on the next move” according to a person who spoke with Macron recently while knowing that according to our colleagues, also confirmed by BFMthe President of the Republic wants to move quickly. So what options are available to Emmanuel Macron?
The faithful Macronists
The first name that comes up is that of Sébastien Lecornu according to RTL. “Sébastien is very discreet, but he talks to everyone. Even LFI recognized his method during the military programming law” one of his friends would have explained to RTL. In July, Liberation revealed a dinner between him and Marine Le Pen at Thierry Solère.
Roland Lescure, Macronist deputy of the French established outside France for the North America region is mentioned everything, like François Bayrou. Still according to our colleagues, the president of the MoDem was received by Alexis Kohler, secretary general of the Élysée. “He ticks a lot of boxes.” a right-wing elected official would have declared to our colleagues.
Like Barnier, another profile from the right?
As was the case for Michel Barnier, there is also the possibility for the President to appoint a minister from the Republicans. In this case, three names stand out. First that of the current Minister of the Interior Bruno Retailleau who seems to be the most compatible with the RN.
The President of the Senate Gérard Larcher is also mentioned, as is François Baroin. Our colleagues specify that the President is not looking for a profile said more “technique” like Thierry Breton, former European Commissioner.
Another possible solution for Emmanuel Macron, simply appoint Michel Barnier again. A completely conceivable possibility and which is not impossible according to the rules. On the other hand, according to someone close to Emmanuel Macron, cited by RTL, the president “swept the option”.
The left sidelined?
According to information from BFMEmmanuel Macron would not see “not the solution on the left”. Although the Bernard Cazeneuve option was mentioned during the summer in an attempt to rally certain members of the NFP, it seems that it does not hold water.
“Even Bernard Cazeneuve, I’m not sure that that wouldn’t cause the loss of part of the Republican Right,” explains a source to our colleagues, specifying “It might have worked in September, but I doubt it”. For their part, the New Popular Front parties maintain their support for Lucie Castets.
