These are situations that Mikaela Shiffrin is almost completely unfamiliar with. The noble technician was hardly ever injured in her career. Then She fell in January on the Cortina d’Ampezzo descent and is therefore foregoing any downhill runs this winter. That’s probably also because her boyfriend Aleksander Kilde crashed badly in Wengen and is still fighting for his comeback.
The next shock followed last weekend. In the Killington giant slalomwhere Shiffrin could have celebrated her 100th World Cup victory in front of a home crowd, she slipped, rolled over and hit the net. The fact that she was transported away by sleigh seemed like an overly cautious measure at first. But now it is clear that the best skier in history will probably have to take a longer break.
“I was impaled,” she writes on Instagram. “It will take a minute… at least a few weeks before I’m able to withstand greater forces again.” The races in Mont-Tremblant, Canada, next weekend have been canceled due to a lack of snow. It is at least questionable whether the 29-year-old will be able to take part in Beaver Creek again a week later. The races in St. Moritz are scheduled to take place shortly before Christmas. It is unclear where exactly she suffered the deep stab wound on the right side of her stomach.
The US team provided information about Shiffrin’s health on Sunday. Ligaments, bones and internal organs were not damaged. But there was a stab wound to the stomach and “severe muscle trauma”. The wound could not be stitched “because it is too deep and there is a risk of infection.”
The Scream by Marcel Hirscher
And another ski star also has bad news this Tuesday. «Last race of the season. What remains is the love for skiing.” This is what Marcel Hirscher writes. After a fall in training, the eight-time overall World Cup winner has to cancel his spectacular comeback.
In a video you can see and hear how the man from Salzburg takes a hit during one of his swings, grabs his knee and screams loudly. Diagnosis: cruciate ligament tear. Most recently, Hirscher, who competes for the Netherlands, missed the second run in the Slalom in Levi and was eliminated in Gurgl. If he drove like that, he would be “out of place,” said the 35-year-old. It is currently uncertain whether he wants to make another attempt and return to the World Cup.
