The boss of the Stellantis automobile group resigned from his position on Sunday. “Divergent points of view” with the board of directors were raised, according to Le Figaro.

He successfully completed the merger between PSA and Fiat-Chrysler in 2021, but his mandate as general manager of Stellantis will not come to an end. Carlos Tavares resigned on Sunday, December 1, from his position at Stellantis, we learned in a press release. This decision was taken during a board meeting held in Amsterdam (Netherlands) and during which Carlos Tavares was pushed towards leaving the Franco-Italian-American group unanimously by voters at cause of “divergent points of view”reports Le Figaro.

For the moment, we do not know precisely the reasons which pushed Carlos Tavares to resign “with immediate effect”although Stellantis has gone through a difficult period recently, with an 18% drop in sales in North America during the first half. In September, the group had already launched the succession process for its CEO, whose mandate was due to end in 2026, but assured that this was not indicative of an early departure: “A little over a year before the end of a five-year contract signed in January 2021, it is entirely normal for a board of directors to look into the subject with the necessary anticipation in view of the importance of the position, without this presaging future discussions”, we then learned in a press release to AFP.

Who for the succession?

For the moment, we do not know who will take over the leadership of the group. Carlos Tavares' successor should be named in the first half of 2025. In the meantime, John Elkann, president of the group, will ensure the transition. According to indiscretions from Le Monde, two personalities are being approached internally to take over Carlos Tavares' position: the Frenchman Maxime Picat, purchasing director and former director of the group's European activities, and the Italian-Brazilian Antonio Filosa, boss of Jeep and director of activities in North America.
