We learned this Sunday, through a statement from his wife to AFP, of the death of actor Niels Arestrup: “ I am extremely sad to announce the death of my husband, the immense actor Niels Arestrup, after a courageous fight against illness. He passed away surrounded by the love of his family ».
He had won several Césars for his participation in films by Jacques Audiard (My heart stopped beating in 2005 and A prophet in 2009). But he was best known to the general public for his role in the political fiction series Black Baron. He played the unscrupulous left-wing candidate Francis Laugier. He also won a Molière for his career in the theater. He also played a remarkable chief of staff in the film Quai d'Orsay by Bertrand Tavernier, alongside Thierry Lhermitte.
Rachida Dati, Minister of Culture, praised his memory on X: “We were dazzled by the strength of his performance and his magnetic presence in front of the camera of Jacques Audiard, Bertrand Tavernier, Julian Schnabel and Albert Dupontel. He will remain as one of our greatest actors”.
The World reminds that “Niels Arestrup owed his name to a Danish father who tried to emigrate to the United States, but who stopped in France to get married” and that he had “grew up in a very modest environment in the suburbs of Paris.”
