Union Berlin is still unbeaten at home in the Bundesliga this season. But now the feared opponent comes from Leverkusen. And somehow the Köpenickers forgot how to score goals before the duel with the champions.
1. FC Union Berlin wants to end its goal drought of 294 Bundesliga minutes with a win against soccer champions Bayer Leverkusen (Saturday, 3:30 p.m.) and extend its home series. The capital club is still unbeaten at the An der Alten Försterei stadium this season, but has been waiting for a three-pointer for five competitive games.
The statistics cannot be used as encouragement for Köpenicker against Leverkusen. Union only won one of the ten Bundesliga games against the Werkself. And as strong as the Berliners are at home, the champions perform just as well away from home. Bayer has not lost any of its last 22 away games across the season.
Union coach Bo Svensson made five changes compared to the 0-1 defeat in Wolfsburg. Defender Diego Leite has to pass after his injury; Leopold Querfeld starts in defense for him. Tom Rothe replaces Robert Skov on the left wing. And on offense, Jeong, Benedict Hollerbach and Tim Skarke embody the hope of goals, while Janik Haberer, Yorbe Vertessen and Jordan have to sit on the bench.
Lineup Union: 1 Rönnow – 5 Doekhi, 2 Vogt, 14 Querfeld – 28 Trimmel, 36 Kemlein, 8 R. Khedira, 15 Rothe – 11 Skarke
Leverkusen lineup: 1 Hradecky – 13 Arthur, 4 Tah, 12 Tapsoba, 3 Hincapie – 8 Andrich, 34 Xhaka – 30 Frimpong, 24 Garcia, 20 Grimaldo – 14 Schick
