Greenland inaugurates new Nuuk airport

With the new Nuuk airport, Greenland will be able to accommodate more long-haul flights…

The long-planned opening of Nuuk Airport took place on November 28, 2024. It features a new 2,200-meter runway built specifically to accommodate long-haul aircraft and a terminal.

The airport will help develop tourism in the country but also make it easier for residents to travel. The airport has a capacity of 800 passengers per hour and welcomed the first flight of Air Greenland, the national airline, operated in DASH-8.

The opening of Nuuk International Airport is a historic moment for Greenland. It will change everything that international planes can fly directly to the capital,” said Anne Nivíka Grødem, CEO of Visit Greenland.

The airport will notably offer 5 flights per week from Nuuk to Copenhagen in Denmark during the winter season as well as one flight per week to Billund as well as flights to Reykjavik.

The American company United has also announced that it will offer 2 direct flights to Greenland from New York from June to September 2025.

In 2026, Greenland plans to open two more airports in Ilussat and Qaqortoq in southern Greenland in order to travel to most of the country in less than an hour and a half.
