“Finally” Union records its first European victory of the season: “Very proud of the way we started”

After 5 matchdays, Union has won a prize in the Europa League. When visiting FC Twente, it scored a hard-fought three-pointer, for which it laid the foundation in a particularly dominant first half. “When you see a Dutch team start playing with the long ball, that is often a good signal,” said coach Sébastien Pocognoli.

“A game plan with a lot of risk,” coach Sébastien Pocognoli called it.

Union defeated FC Twente at home from the first whistle with high pressure, which led to a lot of ball loss in the midfield that was dominated by the Brussels team.

It took full advantage of the space at the back of the Dutch defense. “I
I am very proud of the way we started this match,” said Pocognoli.

Although the trainer did see one downside. Because his team had enough chances to “certainly score a goal or two more.”

An opinion shared by Noah Sadiki, although he was also relieved: “Finally, victory in Europe has been won and that is the most important thing,” he laughed.

We are really in a challenging season as a club, with many new players. Now we know we are on the right track.

Sébastien Pocognoli

“We really surprised them. When you see a Dutch team start playing with the long ball, that is often a good signal,” Pocognoli quickly switched back to the positive he wanted to remember.

The emotions among the coaching staff afterwards were also great. “We are really in a challenging season as a club, with many new players. Now we know we are on the right track.”

“But today is not the only good match we have played this year. We simply cannot afford to play 10% less. Every match is intense.”

“We will look at it match by match,” Pocognoli concluded with a cliché about Union’s chances of surviving in the Europa League.

Maker of the only goal Mohammed Fuseini also saw that this was “a match to raise our level as a team. Little by little we find the connection between the new players and the new coach.”

Appointment on Sunday for yet another test. Then Antwerp comes to visit the Dudenpark.
