Sédhiou, Nov 30 (APS) – The UNICEF mission in Senegal expressed, on Friday, its satisfaction with the achievements accomplished in Sédhiou (south) in collaboration with the government, we learned from its representative Jacques Boyer .
»More than 250 latrines have been installed in rural areas, improving the living conditions of residents. The health and nutritional status of children has considerably improved thanks to UNICEF interventions,” he said.
During his tour in this southern region of the country, he first met the governor of Sédhiou, Diadia Dia, before making a field visit to discuss cooperation between UNICEF and the Senegalese government.
The discussions made it possible to gather opinions on the actions already carried out as well as suggestions for improvement.
”All activities planned in Diendé for children were carried out in consultation with local services, NGOs and populations,” underlined Jacques Boyer.
He indicated that UNICEF has also supported initiatives for the empowerment of women, allowing them to develop income-generating activities, such as soap and bleach manufacturing.
As part of the achievements, young girls from the Amadou Mame Pathé Diagne college received sanitary napkins, to enable them to attend classes in better conditions, recalled the UNICEF representative in Senegal.
Jacques Boyer also raised the issue of child members of the Municipal Council, who, according to him, have received leadership training, allowing them to actively participate in discussions with adults.
Despite efforts, challenges remain, including a lack of teachers and temporary shelters serving as classrooms, he noted, however, reaffirming UNICEF’s commitment to supporting children’s rights and ensuring their well-being.
Doura Cissé, mayor of Diendé, for his part, noted the importance of this visit which celebrates successes and makes it possible to formulate recommendations for a lasting impact on the lives of children and families in Sédhiou.
