Erik’s pacemaker, Jaimie from ‘Nonkels’ and an exploding hamster: this was ‘The smartest person in the world’

The winner of this episode

Newcomer Aster Nzeyimana immediately wins his first episode. It turns out he’s good at it cataoke – a version of karaoke, but as a cat – but just steals the ultimate victory from Daphne Agten with the keyword Coffee leave.

The loser

Vooruit leader and Flemish minister Melissa Depraetere loses out in the final. Agten drops her from 85 seconds to 23 seconds, so that she can be the first to speak for the last question. It is about Louis XIV, about which Agten can easily give two keywords.

The newcomer Thursday

On Thursday, theater maker Pascale Platel will take a seat in one of the orange chairs of ‘The smartest person’. The Ghent native will compete against Daphne Agten, who is increasingly looking at a record number of participations, and Aster Nzeyimana.

Most striking quotes

This is already the fourteenth episode of actress Daphne Agten. Ella Leyers’ record is therefore gradually under threat. Leyers threw the pink bar that matched her suit into the air during her record. “Are you going to do something special?” asks Van Looy. “Daphne responds firmly; “I’m going to breakdance.”

***

Lieven Scheire: “I think Melissa will play very strongly. She is completely at ease here, namely between green and blue (the colors of the clothes of the other candidates, ed.).”

Jelle De Beule: “Then she actually has to stab Green in the back, right? I’m from Ghent people, sorry!”

Scheire: “She is sitting in an orange chair between green and blue, and while they think that is the essence, there is some kind of big, yellow danger hanging over their heads.”

***

Last year there was one sign language interpreter who could help hearing-impaired or deaf people in the audience, this year there are two. “This way they can alternate, because otherwise it would be too tiring,” says Gilles in the audience, who cannot hear well.

Scheire: “And I had been thinking for fifteen minutes now: ‘It’s been a long time since two women were gesticulating at me like that.’”

Suddenly there is a third juror. Jaimie Van Kerschaver out Uncles asks a question in the second round, dressed as a magician. But his trick doesn’t go as planned: he tries to conjure up a question under Nzeyimana’s chair. “Oops, something went wrong,” says Jaimie, after which he puts himself in the studio – with the obligatory smoke effects – and asks his question. He remains seated between the two other judges for the entire episode.

When the jury is asked who will win the final, it is immediately clear to Jaimie: Melissa Depraetere. Why is he so sure of that? “You are charming, sweet…” To which Agten looks surprised – as if she is not. After being whispered by Jelle De Beule, Jaimie says: “Daphne, you are also charming and sweet. But you have already won so much. Now the next one can come.”

Nzeyimana, of whom Jaimie is a big fan, gets a big hug and Melissa also gets a hand. Jaimie walks away, leaving an again surprised Daphne Agten without a greeting. After Nzeyimana draws his attention to this, she also receives a hug.

Most striking question

Internet phenomenon Elodie Gabias shows how independent she is, at the age of 27. She takes care of herself and her hamster Charlotte. When she puts the hamster back in her cage, she does not close the door properly. While she shows how she has a piece of yesterday’s lasagna for herself and a container of raw vegetables for Charlotte, the hamster crawls onto the lasagna. Without looking, Gabias puts her lasagna in the microwave. “I can hear you thinking: ‘She’s going to give the lasagna to the hamster and put the raw vegetables in the oven.’ No no. I already told you: 27 years old and perfectly able to live independently.” After which the hamster explodes in the oven.

Best spontaneous mop

After a somewhat lame joke, Van Looy grabs his ribs. “Sometimes when I laugh too hard, my ribs hurt. Do you sometimes have that too?” he asks candidates. “Ah, I thought it was your pacemaker,” Depraetere says carefully, after which the audience bursts into laughter.

“Cut Finale, Rock Game”

The final will be played by Agten and Depraetere. The game continues evenly, until the penultimate question. “If I want to walk from Tirana to Istanbul via the shortest route, which countries will I pass through?” Depraetere, who starts with 83 seconds, finds Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey, bringing Agten back to 85 seconds.

Agten soon finds Albania, but does not know the last keyword – North Macedonia. She still guesses at Legoland, Luilekkerland and Flevoland. Everything to reduce her own time and not cause an endless silence. “Sorry, this is really bad,” she says as time ticks away. “This really is a shit game. How unsympathetic.” She drops her time to 23 seconds and finishes it with two terms on Louis XIV.
