Champions League | Bologna 1-2 : Terrible Rossoblu crumble in Europe

Bologna are practically out of the Champions League now after a fourth consecutive defeat, though they did finally manage to score a goal against LOSC.

The Rossoblu scraped one point from the first four Champions League games, despite rediscovering their form in Serie A after a dismal start. Michel Aebischer and Nicolò Cambiaghi were still out of action, but Lewis Ferguson got his first start since ACL surgery in April. Giant-killers had beaten Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid before holding Juventus 1-1, but made the trip without Andre Gomes, Ethan Mbappé, Samuel Umtiti, Tiago Santos and Angel Gomes.

See how it all unfolded on the Liveblog.

Jonathan David curled just wide in the opening minutes, then Thijs Dallinga had the ball in the net at the fifth on a Riccardo Orsolini through ball, but VAR confirmed he was just offside. It was the third Bologna goal disallowed in the Champions League this season.

LOSC came very close on 12 minutes when Alexsandro was allowed a free header on a corner that he thumped against the upright, followed by an acrobatic Thomas Meunier follow-up wide.

Giovanni Fabbian blasted straight at the goalkeeper and Lukasz Skorupski had to come flying off his line to deny Matias Fernandez-Pardo after a rapid solo counter, pushing it off his boot with one glove.

The opener was gifted to Lille on the stroke of half-time. Stefan Posch attempted a long clearance, but smashed it into teammate Sam Beukema, then Bologna seemed to assume it was going out for a corner, not realising David kept it in play and pulled back for Ngal’Ayel Mukau. His first attempt was cleared off the line by Posch, but the second drilled home from eight yards.

After the restart, Skorupski again had to be decisive one-on-one with Fernandez-Pardo after Dan Ndoye gave it away cheaply.

There was a huge opportunity to equalise on 58 minutes when Remo Freuler hooked in a cross, but Dallinga’s weak header was straight at Lucas Chevalier and the goalkeeper also managed to smother the Ferguson follow-up.

Bologna finally got their first Champions League goal when Charalampos Lykogiannis curled the free kick towards the near post, where Jhon Lucumi was ready to prod home on the volley with a delicate finish from five yards.

However, the joy didn’t last long, as LOSC immediately took matters back into their hands and Fernandez-Pardo rolled across for Mukau to again turn in relatively undisturbed.

Skorupski prevented them getting a third moments later by sticking out a boot on another Fernandez-Pardo pull-back after Dan Ndoye had given it away.

The goalkeeper kept the scoreline down with a heroic double save on Fernandez-Pardo and Osame Sahraoui, then denied Ayyoub Bouaddi, as Bologna visibly lost confidence.
