Former leader of the French Communist Party (PCF), André Lajoinie died at the age of 94. His death was announced by Fabien Roussel on X (formerly Twitter), Tuesday November 26. “Immense sadness at the announcement of the death of André Lajoinie. I send my most fraternal condolences to his family, his loved ones, to those who shared his fights for the working classes, for his territory, for France. We have lost a man of great humanity.”wrote the current national secretary of the PCF on the social network.

Son of Corrèze peasants, André Lajoinie defended “a predominantly family-based agriculture, with structures on a human scale”reports Le Figaro. He first joined the Communist Youth after the Second World War. His consecration came in the 1980s, by joining the PCF secretariat then by running in the 1988 presidential election, where he obtained 6.76% of the vote, a score which guaranteed him reimbursement of his campaign expenses.
“André Lajoinie was born into a family of modest peasants, and he grew up in the spirit of the Resistance. All his life, faithful to his communist commitment, he fought for social justice and for family farming”paid tribute to François Hollande on “his absolute dedication to communism and popular struggles, particularly in rural and peasant environments, for which he was an effective and powerful spokesperson”.
