You have already completed season 2 of The Empress ? Don't panic, there's plenty to enjoy when it comes to historical series on Netflix. With notable heroines, what’s more.
Six new episodes and then it's gone: The Empress still captivates as much in its season 2, online since November 22, 2024, but we are all the more frustrated at the end. It must be said that Devrim Lingnau perfectly embodies the tragedy and intensity of Sissi, in this new German interpretation. After these six episodes, we need other historical series to console ourselves. So head to England, Canada, Spain and Korea, between court intrigues or heroines determined to change things.
The ladies of the telephone
Like Sissi, the heroines of Phone ladies (The Cable Girls) face a narrow, even brutal, patriarchal society. But they too will send social codes flying. This Spanish series in 5 seasons, taking place between the 1920s and 1930s, gives pride of place to sorority, recounting the trajectory – and the social struggle – of several switchboard operators. What's more, it's not just historical drama: the suspense (and even the action later) is there. With an end to the series that will remain marked in your minds.
Anne with an E
There are different forms of rebellion. Anne's is soft and full of wonder, like poetry. While the Cuthberts were thinking of adopting a young boy to work on their farm, they ultimately found themselves with an orphaned girl named “Anne” (with an E). If they first think about sending her away, fate will have it otherwise. Anne with an E is the story of a young heroine who is always looking for big words for big ideas, who gives in to the most overflowing enthusiasm as well as the most tragic despair. A sensitive historical series like no other, with an increasingly strong social theme over the three seasons.
The Intrigue and the King
If you like court intrigue, Korean historical series, set in the country's Joseon period, might just satisfy that thirst. In The Intrigue and the Kingthe heroine Kang Hee S is driven by her need for revenge: she therefore joins the court of the — new — king to take her revenge. In her role as a spy, as she gets closer to this man, her heart ends up taking her into its own trap. Nothing will be simple in this mission.
Queen Charlotte
For some, Queen Charlotte is a little better than Bridgerton due to more feminist writing. This spin-off is a prequel entirely dedicated to the past of the queen, played by Golda Rosheuvel in the famous series; but here by India Amarteifio in her young version. The character discovers the constraints of his role and the secrets of the court, as well as the king's illness. Note that you can watch Queen Charlotte without having seen The Bridgerton Chronicles.
Mr Sunshine
The historical drama Mr Sunshine is considered a masterpiece also for its aesthetic quality worthy of a great film. If you like Sissi's determination, the colorful characters of this Korean series (in 24 episodes of more than an hour – we had you promis to keep you busy) will please you just as much. It takes place between the end of Joseon and the start of Japanese colonization of the country, at the beginning of 1900. At the heart of this brutal and boiling historical context, we follow a touching love story. Not to mention an aristocratic heroine, certainly, but with a searing rage. With Kim Tae-ri (Twenty-Five Twenty-One) and Lee Byung-hun (Squid Game).
