Traian Băsescu spoke exclusively on Monday, on Digi24, about Călin Georgescu and Elena Lasconi, the candidates who entered the second round of the presidential elections. “Romania is a pro-European country, a country that is increasingly anchored in the European Union. Romania does not need identity doubts, or doubts about who its allies are. We don't need, and the population of Romania doesn't need people who consulted with Dughin, it doesn't need people who believe that legionary values can be preached even today”, said the former president about candidate Georgescu. As for Elena Lasconi, Băsescu said that Romanians must get used to the idea that the country will have a woman as president, and that until she takes over the mandate, she must read a lot and prepare herself with foreign policy .
“The decisions of Marcel Ciolacu and Nicolae Ciucă (the two resigned – ed.) represent normality in the parties, so they acted correctly. The only incorrect thing is what Ciolacu is doing, namely the fact that he remains at the head of the Government. He should also submit his mandate as prime minister to President Iohannis, because otherwise he maintains this alliance that has done a lot of harm to Romania and the Romanians.
I have met Călin Georgescu before in my life, or I have heard of him before. He will not have a supporter in me. He will definitely not have a supporter in me. Romania is a pro-European country, a country that is increasingly anchored in the European Union. Romania does not need identity doubts, or doubts about who its allies are. We don't need, and the population of Romania doesn't need people who consulted with Dughin, it doesn't need people who believe that legionary values can be preached even today”, Traian Băsescu told Digi24.
“Georgescu knows books. Georgescu's problem is not the lack of book knowledge, but the faith he has, which has nothing in common with the developments of modern European society, even if I and everyone around me are people who, being in the European People's Party, believe in traditional values - family, religion, church in our life. But, Călin Georgescu is far beyond what can be accepted in the European Union today, and even what could be accepted in the interwar period – the legionnaires were not acceptable, and they were an evil of the interwar period, and of the period of the World War II. However, his faith has nothing in common with the modern faith, and leads rather to legionaryism.
He will not have in me a supporter, but an adversary. Mrs. Lasconi has another problem – preparing for the position of president. Until December 21, he has all the time to read. I recommend him not to waste time, and to read about the Middle East, about Central Asia, about the Black Sea, about Russia, about the NATO treaty, or about the Treaty of Lisbon. There are things they have to do.
Romania must accept a woman as president, because the alternative to Lasconi is a man who has legionary approaches. Romania doesn't need something like that, and it doesn't need the mistrust that such a perspective arouses, to have Georgescu as president”, added the former president.
“I don't want to tell you how many phone calls I received today for clarification. Not from the mother, God forgive her, but from European dignitaries. And I told them. They asked me what was the reason for arriving here. I'm not talking about the chancellors, I'm talking about the Commission and the European Parliament. The question is, what is the cause for which he got here. I told them – deep corruption. Romania returned to endemic corruption, returned to a prime minister who administers the budget as if it were his own money, that is, he puts the budget in the government's reserve fund, after which he distributes it to the political clientele. I explained this, and they couldn't believe that Ciolacu, or that such a thing is possible in Romania.
I told them about the barebones propaganda “that you live better”, but in statistics we look bad, and especially I told them that there are no programs for young people, because the young people had an incredible reaction. However, this is the result of the fact that they threw tens of billions in loans to the political clientele, and did not start some programs for the young generation, which has no horizons.
Georgescu is not a solution for Romania.
Exactly for the reasons I told you now that I will not support him, exactly for the same reasons I did not accept him as prime minister in 2010, when the Boc Government fell”, said Băsescu.
