Donald Trump’s team is preparing to work with the outgoing Joe Biden administration to establish a “arrangement” between Ukraine and Russia, in response to growing concern about the escalation of the conflict. Mike Waltz, future national security adviser, said on Fox News that the priority would be to determine the modalities of a possible agreement, while emphasizing the need to bring the two parties together around the negotiating table.
Since Trump’s election on November 5, fears have intensified among Europeans about possible U.S. disengagement in the Ukraine conflict, as well as U.S. pressure on kyiv for compromise.
Waltz stressed that Trump is committed to ending this conflict, but did not specify how that could be achieved. He also expressed concerns over Biden’s recent decision to allow Ukraine to use U.S. missiles against targets in Russia.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov accused the Biden administration of undermining Trump’s efforts to reach a peaceful resolution, saying Washington’s current actions could jeopardize any chance of an agreement. With Trump set to take office on January 20, he has promised to act quickly to end the war that has lasted more than 1,000 days.
With a team described as “hawkish“, also including Marco Rubio as future Secretary of State, Waltz is seen as a key player in shaping US foreign policy under Trump. A team described as “hawkish” is a group of politicians or decision-makers, who favor an aggressive and interventionist approach, favoring the use of force or strict measures rather than diplomatic or peaceful methods.
The latter has already expressed skepticism about the billions in aid provided by Biden to Ukraine since the start of the conflict.
