The first statements of Călin Georgescu, the big surprise from the first round of the presidential elections

Călin Georgescu achieved a surprising result, as shown by the results of exit polls at the national level in the presidential elections in the first round.

Shortly after the publication of the first estimates, Călin Georgescu made statements in which he thanked those who voted for him, declaring that Sunday’s vote was an “awakening of conscience”.

Călin Georgescu’s full statement after the polls closed:

“I thank the Romanian people for their effort, sacrifice and responsibility. Thanks also for the awakening in consciousness that was and is phenomenal. Thank you for answering my call because, as I said, we were not and are not in an electoral campaign, we are a work in a work with each other and all of us with God the 35 years of economic insecurity imposed on the Romanian people today it has turned into insecurity for political parties. Tonight, the Romanian people shouted “peace” and shouted very loudly, extremely loudly. If the political parties had had less time to listen and less time to speak, perhaps this cry would not have been so loud.

This cry for peace was not a cry of joy, it was a cry of suffering. This I want to be very clear and very precisely pointed out. This Sunday, the 30th after Pentecost, is the parable of the rich young man in the Orthodox Church. At the liturgy, the essence is the following: no matter how rich you are, you are in vain if you do not have God. The Romanian people passed through the eye of the needle today, and the oligarchic system did not. In other words, the rich of the system, today, in Romania, have become poorer, and the people, the poor Romanian people, have become richer from this point of view. Everything that has happened today we say is an amazing awakening to what has happened in the history of this people and at the same time everything that has happened to us, whether it was good or whether it was wrong, matters that we must understand , to be responsible, nothing else.

We have a duty to restore Romania and that is the most important thing. No matter what happened, the Romanian people understood that through the family, the backbone of Romanian society, and no matter what happens to the small family and me, personally, the big family that means my people, no matter who voted for me or who didn’t, I will respect, help and encourage them all. Through courage I wrote and the history of the Romanian people was written, and today, through the lit candle of hope, the courage to be Romanian was reborn. It is the most important thing I am saying tonight, because the Romanian people have chosen to stop kneeling, to stop being invaded, to stop being oppressed, to stop being humiliated. We are strong, we are brave. There were a lot of people voting and there will be a lot of people voting in the second round as well.

I thank everyone, we are waiting with confidence and devotion for everything that the Romanian people wrote in history and at this moment it is clear that we all said: we are not doing politics, we are making history. Thank you all.”

Who is Călin Georgescu, the big surprise of the presidential elections

Călin Georgescu is 62 years old and ran as an independent in this year’s presidential elections. He chose his motto “My party is the Romanian people”.

The submission of his candidacy for the highest position in the state took place on October 1, on which occasion Călin Georgescu declared that “(…) after 34 years of wandering, for the first time, the Romanian people will win these elections. My party is the Romanian people. And I say something more: my party is only the Romanian people, whom I love and serve and who will bring back the cult of honor and dignity – ours as people and ours as a nation, to understand that we need health, we need of social peace in these moments and, above all, for the moral construction of the human being, which is essential in these times”.

Călin Georgescu was born in Bucharest, on March 26, 1962. He graduated from the Land Recovery College, the “Nicolae Bălcescu” Institute of Agronomy in Bucharest. In 1999, he obtained the title of doctor in pedology.

Between 1997 and 2013, Călin Georgescu was executive director of the National Center for Sustainable Development. In 2013, he became the president of the European Research Center of the Club of Rome. Călin Georgescu was also secretary general in the Ministry of the Environment and director of the Directorate of International Economic Organizations in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

From 2021, he holds the teaching position at the National University of Science and Technology Politehnica Bucharest – Pitești Branch.

Călin Georgescu’s career in politics

In 2011, his name was circulated on a possible short list of independent candidates for the position of prime minister, instead of Emil Boc. The episode with his name circulating as a possible candidate for the Victoria palace was repeated in 2012, where Georgescu appeared on a list alongside Lucian Croitoru, Leonard Orban, Mihai Răzvan Ungureanu and others.

In 2015, against the background of the departure of Victor Ponta from the Victoria Palace, following the massive protests after the Colectiv tragedy, Dan Puric declared that he supports Georgescu for the position of prime minister.

In 2016, the Romanian Civil Society Federation, through an open letter, proposed him for the position of prime minister, on behalf of “more than 3 million citizens”.

Four years later, in December 2020, Călin Georgescu was AUR’s proposal for the position of prime minister. He was, officially, on the list of three people proposed by the parties for the position of prime minister, along with Alexandru Rafila (proposed by PSD) and Florin Cîțu (proposed by the PNL-USR-UDMR alliance). President Klaus Iohannis then appointed Florin Cîțu.

In 2022, Georgescu was appointed honorary president of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians. Later, the relationship between Călin Georgescu and the AUR leader, George Simion, became more and more tense.

In September of this year, he accused Simion of secretly supporting PSD. “Ukraine is a proxy for Russia, and AUR is a proxy for PSD, it’s very simple. It can be seen with the naked eye”, stated Călin Georgescu.

Lately, the independent presidential candidate has been presented in several press articles as a declared pro-Russian, some even considering him the representative of Moscow’s interests in Romania.
