INTERVIEW – The deputy director of the Foundation for Strategic Research believes that Thursday's firing of a new type of Russian ballistic missile illustrates both Moscow's prudence and its desire for controlled escalation.

Ukraine accused Russia on Thursday morning, at first light, of having fired an intercontinental ballistic missile. At the end of the day, Russia denied having launched such a long-range missile, closely linked to nuclear deterrence, but admitted having fired a “medium-range” ballistic missile, according to a statement by Vladimir Putin himself, from “intermediate range” selon Washington.

In the burning context of the war in Ukraine, the United States and the United Kingdom having recently authorized the use by kyiv of Atacms and Storm Shadow missiles against Russian territory and Russia having announced that it had “evolve” its nuclear doctrine, this new event constitutes a “controlled escalation”assures researcher Bruno Tertrais.
