Enedis declares war on fraud affecting Linky meters. The network manager plans to generalize controls in 2025 against this scourge which has cost it 250 million euros since 2022.
Enedis wants to put an end to Linky meter fraud. With the surge in energy prices, illegal manipulations aimed at undervaluing electricity consumption have indeed increased in recent years. The tampered with meters would represent a shortfall of 250 million euros for the company since 2022.
The electricity network manager therefore plans to strengthen controls in 2025, reports
The Dispatch
.
“Currently, 250 employees of the company are mobilized on these issues. We will double this workforce to reach 500 people during the year 2025”
explains Olivier Molinero, Director of Communication and CSR at Enedis, to the daily newspaper.
Illegal manipulation to reduce your electricity bill
A first wave of checks targeting 500 customers has already been carried out in five regions (Ile-de-France, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Grand Est, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur and Occitanie). If a customer prevents agents from accessing their meter despite formal notice, the company reserves the right to cut off electricity in the home after a period of ten days following sending the letter. She also plans to file a complaint and become a civil party in the event of a dispute.
Linky meter fraud can reduce the customer's electricity bill by up to 70%. Malicious people offer their services on social networks to carry out the manipulation for a few hundred euros. But, on arrival,
“It is therefore non-fraudulent consumers who pay for dishonest customers”
regrets Olivier Molinero. And this illegal operation can also have disastrous security consequences.
