Several weather alerts have been issued for this Wednesday and Thursday. The areas most at risk, on red alert, are Andalusia (Malaga region) and Catalonia (Barcelona region). The community of Valencia is placed on orange alert.

Up to 250 mm expected in Catalonia between Wednesday and Thursday

A news cold dropcoming down from Central Europe towards the Iberian Peninsula, is centered this Wednesday on Portugal. It generates, at the front, instability coming from the Mediterranean. Strong thunderstorms accompanied by torrential rain are expected this Wednesday. Initially, it is mainly the Balearic Islands and the south of Catalonia which are exposed. The most critical period begins this Wednesday at 12 p.m. and lasts until the middle of next night. Accumulations of more than 60 mm in 3 hours are possible in southern Catalonia, particularly between Tarragona and Tortosa. Barcelona should be spared the brunt of this precipitation. In total, accumulations could approach 250 mm in this region.

Valencia hit again with up to 150mm expected

Unfortunately, the province of Valencia is also expected to be affected overnight. The highest risk period extends from midnight this evening until early afternoon this Thursday. Here too, torrential rains are forecast with intensities reaching 50 mm in the space of 3 hours. This precipitation will fall on already saturated soils, weakened by the catastrophic floods at the end of October. The region is placed on orange alert, and the authorities therefore remain very vigilant.

Andalusia also strongly affected

Very heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected in Andalusia this Wednesday. The region between Gibraltar and Malaga is particularly exposed. The most critical period is expected to begin late afternoon and continue until Thursday morning. Other storms are expected Thursday during the day, but with less intensity. Total accumulations could locally reach 150 mm.

The risk of bad weather should recede this weekend, as the cold drop moves towards the Canary Islands. Drier and above all calmer weather will set in temporarily.
