Smoothness in Friesland near Hilaard

It may be slippery on the roads in large parts of the country this morning. Last night wet snow or hail fell in several places. Because the temperature may have also fallen below zero, parts of the road may be frozen.

Due to the slippery conditions, the KNMI has issued a code yellow for this morning. The warning applies to almost the entire country, with the exception of the provinces of Zeeland and South Holland and the Wadden. Code yellow applies until 10 a.m. in North Holland, Utrecht, Gelderland, North Brabant and Limburg. For Flevoland the warning applies until 3 p.m., for Friesland, Groningen, Drenthe and Overijssel it remains in force until 9 p.m.

For the first time this season, Rijkswaterstaat responded extensively to combat slippery conditions: at 6:30 am, 1.8 million kilos of salt had already been spread on 27,000 kilometers of asphalt.

Slippery conditions, accidents and code yellow: many delays in the morning rush hour

At the beginning of the night, the Vlaketunnel on the A58 in Zeeland was closed for an hour after several accidents due to the winter weather. There were also problems due to slippery conditions in other places in the province.

Rijkswaterstaat saw ‘white scenes’ around Den Bosch and Eindhoven last night, but this did not cause any problems for traffic. It is advised to be alert. According to the KNMI, between three and five centimeters of snow may fall locally in the hills in Limburg. Later in the day this is also possible in the northeast of the country.

The snowfall led to major problems on the road yesterday and resulted in a busy morning rush hour.
