This Wednesday, November 20, Météo France placed the Var on yellow alert due to violent winds blowing in the department since the day before. The first hours of the day have already been marked by gusts exceeding 100 km/h, with impressive readings in Porquerolles, Dramont and on the Ile du Levant.
Impressive gusts this morning
The Var, swept by a significant windy episode, has recorded particularly powerful gusts since this morning. At 8 a.m., a gust reaching 113 km/ha was recorded in Porquerolles, one of the records of the morning. Not far from there, a peak of 110 km/ha was measured on the island of Levant. In Dramont, a wind reaching 112 km/ha was recorded.
These phenomena are linked to a depression positioned off the Mediterranean, generating sustained winds throughout the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. If these gusts mainly affect coastal areas and exposed reliefs, the interior is not spared, with strong winds that can complicate travel and cause local damage.
Vigilance to be maintained all day long
The yellow alert for violent winds, activated by Météo France, remains in force for the entire day. This alert reminds residents and visitors of the need to remain cautious of these weather conditions. Among the recommendations: avoid outdoor activities, secure objects likely to be blown away by the wind, and limit non-essential travel.
Motorists must in particular be extra vigilant on the roads, particularly on bridges and other exposed areas, where gusts can unbalance vehicles, especially heavy goods vehicles and two-wheelers.
Troubled weather across the entire coastline
This episode of violent winds is not limited to the Var. In neighboring departments and particularly in Corsica, exceptional gusts, potentially reaching 200 km/h on the hills, are expected during the day. The entire Mediterranean coast is under the influence of this powerful wind flow which should gradually ease in the coming hours.
In the meantime, residents of Var will have to deal with difficult weather conditions and remain attentive to the instructions of local authorities.
