More than a hundred interventions were carried out on Tuesday in the provinces of Hainaut, Luxembourg and the Brussels region due to bad weather, local emergency areas reported.
The Royal Meteorological Institute issued a yellow rain alert on Tuesday between 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. in the provinces of Namur, Liège and Luxembourg. This announced precipitation of 30 to 40 l/m² in 24 hours, or even 50 l/m² locally. “However, similar quantities were observed in the north of the province of Hainaut and in Walloon Brabant”according to the latest update from the hydrometry service of the Walloon Region.
Flooded roads and streets, blocked drains
In western Hainaut, firefighters have already carried out around sixty exits. “The first interventions were recorded around 9:30 a.m. and continued non-stop“, specified the dispatching of the Picardy Wallonia emergency zone (Wapi). All the towns and municipalities in the area were victims of this bad weather, except Comines and Mouscron. The main entities affected are Tournai, Antoing, Brunehaut, Rumes , Ath, Lessines, Péruwelz and Bernissart. “We have not reported any casualties or even accidents linked to this bad weather”added the Wapi zone. “The main interventions concern flooded roads and streets, blocked drains and mudslides on the roads.”
The Pairi Daiza animal park, located in Brugelette, was not spared. It was partly flooded on Tuesday afternoon due to heavy rains which caused the Dendre to overflow. Only a few areas of the site were affected.
The situation calmed down this evening
In the province of Luxembourg, firefighters carried out 68 interventions, mainly linked to falling branches and trees, the local emergency zone reported at the end of the day. These mainly caused road obstructions, with the exception of a tree that fell on a car, she said. Firefighters intervened in particular in the Center-Ardenne, between Libramont and Marche-en-Famenne, and further south, in the surroundings of Florenville, Arlon and Virton.
The situation seemed to calm down at the end of the day. “Interventions always come in dribs and drabs. Earlier in the day, we had around fifteen simultaneous interventions at all times”the rescue zone said around 7 p.m.
In the capital, 52 interventions were carried out, including 36 for flooded roads or for individuals and seven for trees and branches on public roads. According to the precipitation radar, the situation is stabilizing, reassured the Brussels firefighters.
The IRM has also issued another yellow alert for Wednesday morning in all Walloon provinces, with the exception of Walloon Brabant.
