Will snow or not snow? Météo-France predicts a return of cold weather and a first full-blown snow offensive of up to 5 centimeters from Thursday in several regions of France.
Several scenarios are still possible and some instability remains on the exact quantity and precise location of snowfall.
Forecasts are difficult at this stage, according to Romain Weber of Lyon Météo. “The forecast for Thursday is a real headache, our region (Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes) will be located at the heart of an air mass conflict following the passage of a depression. Either we will be in mild air with some rain and a strong southerly wind, or in colder air with possibly snow all the way to the plains,” estimates the specialist.
A few centimeters in the plains, up to 50 cm in the Alps
“In the plains, we expect two to three centimeters in the most exposed areas, on the Brittany / Normandy / Île-de-France / Rhône-Alpes corridor,” according to Yann Amice, meteorologist at Weather & Co, interviewed by actu.fr.
On the massifs of the region, “10 to 15 cm of snow” are announced on the Massif Central, up to 50 cm in the Alps and accumulations of around 1.65 m of snow on the Alpine massif, the first heavy snowfall in the Alps.
Multiple snowfall scenarios
Different snowfall forecast scenarios exist, depending on the weather model chosen. The German ICON model provides for a few centimeters of a strip running from Brittany to the Massif Central. The Rhône and the Lyon metropolis would be affected by a few centimeters in the plain, according to this map.
The American GFS model also forecasts snowfall on the Rhône but in less quantity and over a smaller extent in the department.
The Swiss-MRF model forecasts greater quantities of snow over almost the entire Rhône-Alpes region, including the Rhône and Lyon.
Especially in the north of the Rhône
According to Météo France forecasts, the first snowflakes are possible on Wednesday evening on the northern tip of the Rhône department.
In the afternoon of Thursday, the sectors of Trades, Beaujeu, Thizy, Tarare and Saint-Symphorien-sur-Coize in the north and west of the department could be affected by snow.
During the night from Thursday to Friday, snowfall could continue in these areas.
At this stage, the forecasts, which remain uncertain, do not predict snow in the metropolis of Lyon. But depending on the scenarios, the situation could change quickly this Thursday…
