San Marino won on the Liechtenstein pitch this Monday, during the last day of the League of Nations (1-3). The microstate located in Italy scored three goals in a match for the first time. A performance which allows Serenissima to qualify for League C.
An explosion of collective joy. The entire San Marino team invaded the pitch of the Rheinpark Stadion to celebrate the third victory in its history (the first away, the second in official competition), this Monday in Vaduz, the capital of Liechtenstein (1- 3). At the end of a prolific match, the micro-state of 35,000 inhabitants landlocked in eastern Italy, between Emilia-Romagna and the Marches, fell into drunkenness this Monday during the last day of the League of Nations.
La Serenissima had nevertheless conceded the opening score. But Roberto Cevoli's players, authors of 16 shots (including 5 on target), managed to turn the match around thanks to a strike from Lorenzo Lazzari (46th), a penalty from Nicola Nanni (66th) and a decisive gesture from Alessandro Golinucci (76th). This is the first time that San Marino, which had already beaten Liechtenstein – its one and only victim – in 2004 and then at the beginning of September (1-0), scored three goals in the same match.
San Marino will no longer be last in the Fifa rankings
This remarkable success allows the Ciel et Blanc to finish at the top of group 1 of League D, ahead of Gibraltar and Liechtenstein. Enough to validate qualification for League C of the League of Nations. San Marino will also take advantage of this victory to leave the 210th and last place in the Fifa ranking.
