The Public Prosecution Service in Belgium has demanded a 37-month prison sentence against Sven Pichal for possessing and distributing child pornography. The former radio presenter of the Belgian broadcaster VRT was arrested in August last year in an investigation into child abuse and is on trial today in court in Antwerp. The Public Prosecution Service also demands an 8,000 euro fine. Pichal has pleaded guilty.
Although the 45-year-old Belgian wanted the hearing to take place behind closed doors, it became a public hearing, with the press and public also present. The presenter worked for the VRT for more than 20 years and made several radio programs there. He is also seen as an important advocate of LGBTI rights.
‘Disgusting images’
He is said to have exchanged images of child abuse with other suspects for years via chat apps such as WhatsApp. In those app groups, the suspects are also said to have shared fantasies about abusing minors. The other suspects in the case were previously convicted. They received prison sentences of 1.5 to 8 years. The highest sentence was imposed on a suspect who not only shared images, but also raped two minors.
The judge spoke of “downright disgusting images” on Pichal’s phone. 131 nude photos and videos of minors aged 1 year and older were found. Some images showed sexual acts being performed.
He was in jail for three months, but was released on conditions. For example, he had to wear an ankle monitor for a short time, was banned from using the internet, was required to undergo therapy and was not allowed to visit catering establishments.
Pichal read a text at the hearing in which he said he found his actions terrible. He said he was grateful that the police stopped him and that he will continue to search within himself for why he sought out the images. He also apologized to the victims, the VRT and his family, among others.
Drugs
The former presenter was also charged with sale and possession of drugs. A small amount of cocaine was found in his locker at the VRT. He also allegedly had drugs delivered to the broadcaster and sold drugs to a colleague. Shortly before it became known that he had been arrested, his lawyer announced that Pichal had resigned from the VRT.
Pichal will not be prosecuted for the charges of drug possession and sale, unless he commits new crimes. The radio presenter is said to have stated that he was almost always under the influence of drugs when he was active in the app groups.
The judge will rule in the case on December 16.
