On the penultimate matchday of the Nations League, the German national team faces Bosnia and Herzegovina. The national coach made his sporting goals unmistakably clear before the game. At the end of the “good, but not very good” European Championship year, which ultimately only missed the coronation at the home tournament, the 37-year-old has his sights firmly set on his goals with the national soccer team
Before the Bosnia game: Nagelsmann demands mentality
“In general, I want us to get on the bus and go to the game and everyone has the self-image: of course we will win today, we are Germany, we are a football nation, we will win. And it’s just about consistency,” said Nagelsmann in an interview for the Bayerischer Rundfunk’s “Blickpunkt Sport” program. As an example, he cited the 2-1 win in Bosnia-Herzegovina in October, with Undav scoring twice.
The change in mentality is Nagelsmann’s greatest achievement. Just a year ago, when the tests against Turkey (2:3) and Austria (0:2) were lost, the players would have sat in the dressing room “like beaten dogs”. He himself was “devastated”. But Nagelsmann recognized the positive in the crisis. This was the only way he could take drastic measures before the European Championships. (epp/dpa)
