If the Montois negotiated the last day better than their Landes neighbor, they will not be favorites during this derby on Basque soil. Logical given the latest opposition between the two clubs.
The thunderous return of US Dax to the Pro D2 fold last season reshuffled the cards for departmental leadership, which had been vested in Stade Montois for several years. Because during the previous exercise, not only did the men from the spa town win twice against those from the prefecture in the regular season, but above all they obtained a place in the top 6, a sphere that the Yellow and Black had taken habit of attending assiduously for several years. Suffice it to say that since these glorious episodes for some and painful for others, the flies have changed mounts. And that it is up to President Cazeaux's men to demonstrate, in Jean-Dauger's lair, their ability to take up the gauntlet to reverse the trend.
Are they capable of it? On paper, certainly, having as many assets up their sleeves as the opponent. But in reality, we don't really know what to think, as the inconsistency in their performances has subjected their supporters to a sort of permanent Scottish shower since the start of this championship.
If we remember correctly, Jeff Dubois' men had built their two successes last year, above all, on the influence of their forward pack, their scrum and their efficiency on carried balls, even if on this double occasion, they had never forgotten to go offshore to see if life is more beautiful. They had also, at least during the return match, ridden on an extraordinary dynamic which had given them wings and indestructible self-confidence.
As for the technical aspects, it is a safe bet that the recipes will be identical this Saturday, especially since the Montois, in the pure sectors of conquest, have not yet given all the guarantees of serenity. Psychologically, it's a different story. Driven by a fierce desire and maximum commitment, there is no doubt, the Dacquois will be. As for confidence, it is no longer quite the same, tested by a slightly more chaotic start to the season.
A busy roadmap
Is this the right time for Patrick Milhet's men to wash away the affront suffered last April on their lawn? To do this, we will have to tick a lot of boxes during this confrontation. The first, as we have said, will lie in the ability to resist the pressure of the Dacquois forwards without making a mistake in order not to suffer in one's camp, and to do this demonstrate unfailing determination in the low times to bend without breaking. It will then be a question of knowing how to combine taking initiatives to instill doubt in the opposing heads, and pragmatism to drive the point home when the opportunities present themselves. Quite a program for a match which, although mid-table, is worth its weight in gold.
In the event of defeat, the Montois would remain stuck at the bottom of the ranking before a final first leg which will not be easy. More than a derby and a question of local supremacy, this match is above all a very important meeting to give ourselves some fresh air and approach the next events with a lighter mind.
