The pension battle

A little help for retirees. Guest of the 8 p.m. news on TF1, Monday November 11, Laurent Wauquiez presented two advances that he claims to have obtained from Prime Minister Michel Barnier in their favor by 2025. “From the start, we said that for us, it was unacceptable for retirees to be the scapegoats for waste [budgétaire, NDLR] that there was”, introduced the deputy and boss of the Republican Right to the National Assembly before going into detail.

“There will be an increase in pensions from January 1 for all pensions. It will be around half of inflation,” which is currently at 1.8%, first announced Laurent Wauquiez before continuing: “On July 1, there will be a second increase for the most modest pensions with one objective: to fully protect them from inflation. A sort of anti-inflation shield so that there is no loss of purchasing power.” The deputy for Haute- indicated that the government had chosen “a threshold, the SMIC, and all pensions below the SMIC will be fully protected against loss of purchasing power.” Aid which should benefit, according to Laurent Wauquiez, nearly one in two retirees.

Between 500 million and one billion euros

For this second revaluation, the elected official gave two concrete cases. A retiree whose pension would be equivalent to 1000 euros per month would see it increase by 200 euros over the year. An increase which would rise to 300 euros per year for those who receive a pension of 1400 euros per month. “These are modest amounts, but I realize that for someone who has a small pension, it counts!”

Questioned by Gilles Bouleau on the cost of this measure, Laurent Wauquiez gave an amount between 500 million and one billion euros. A sum that he intends to finance by generating savings on “la bureaucracy administrative”. “We have around a hundred organizations doing studies that have grown and whose budgets are exploding. Everyone is talking about it but no one is doing anything. We have decided to release a billion euros into it.”

What does the “five-year reform plan” that Michel Barnier intends to present soon consist of?

One avenue was thus mentioned: the merger of Stratégie, the High Commission for Planning, France 2030 and the Center for Prospective Studies. “We have identified all the organizations on which we can make savings, it will be very concrete”, concluded Laurent Wauquiez.
