An unusual accident took place this Monday, November 11, 2024 near Bernay (Eure). A car with five young people aged 16 to 20 on board, all living in the Pont-Audemer region, crossed a roundabout, then hit a fence and a treebefore ending its course in a retention basin. The five young people were hospitalized in four different structures.
The alert was given at 5:40 a.m.
Emergency services were alerted at 5:40 a.m. this Monday, November 11. A car driving in the direction Bernay/Pont-Audemeron departmental road 834, had just finished its journey in the retention basin near the Courbépine toll from the A 28 interchange. How did it get to this point? The ongoing gendarmerie investigation should determine this.
This accident mobilized gendarmes from the Community of Brigades (COB) and the Bernay Companyas well as those of motorized peloton of Courbépine, but also lFirefighters and the Emergency Medical Service. It was first necessary to rescue two young people who had been ejected from the vehicle, before it was submerged in the water of the retention basin. It was also necessary to rescue the three other young people remaining in the vehicle.
She fell “on the right side”
Luckily, the car had fallen “on the right side”, that is to say on its wheels because even if the water level in the basin was not very high, in the event of landing on the roof, the rescue would have been more perilous.
The results of this accident show: five victims, all injured. We do not know more about the seriousness of the young people's injuries. Depending on the nature of these injuries, they were hospitalized at Bernay (for two of them), Evreux, Pont-Audemer and Rouen.
A team of specialized firefighters water lifeguards – who intervene throughout the year on bodies of water and the coastline to provide assistance to people in distress on the surface – intervened to extract the vehicle from the water, once its occupants were rescued.
