Day 1 of João Pereira in Alvalade
Day 1 of João Pereira in Alvalade

This Monday marks João Pereira’s day as Sporting’s new coach. Rúben Amorim’s successor will be presented by Frederico Varandas, in a ceremony that will take place at the José Alvalade Stadium, at 12 pm, in every way identical to that of the coach who is now leaving for Manchester United.

The choice of João Pereira to succeed Rúben Amorim was made a long time ago, having been anticipated due to the arrival of Manchester United in Alvalade, willing to beat the termination clause to take the now former Lions coach, who in four years and half won five titles, including two national championships.

João Pereira, who was trained by Rúben Amorim, the coach who rescued him from Turkey, in 2020/2021, where he represented Trabzonspor, began his career as a coach at Sporting the following year. First as an under-23 assistant, in 2021/2022, before taking on the role of head coach, in 2022/2023 and 2023/2024.

This season he was promoted to command the Lions’ B team, in League 3, succeeding Filipe Çelikkaya, having recorded four wins in eleven games. Yesterday, in the 11th round of Series B, João Pereira said goodbye with defeat, against Oliveira do Hospital, 2-1

After just 17 minutes, Manuel Mendonça put Sporting B ahead, but Rui Santos’ team would react in the first half, with Diogo Nascimento’s equalizer in the 40th minute. At the beginning of the second half, Eduardo Souza (51′) completed the turnaround and the result remained the same until the end.

After the game in Oliveira do Hospital, João Pereira was naturally the center of attention at the Estádio Municipal de Tábua, having been asked for photos and autographs by the fans. Sporting’s new coach responded to the requests, although without revealing anything about his future, which, as we already know, is facing the biggest challenge in his still short career as a coach, taking command of the current national champion.

Today is João Pereira’s day 1 in Alvalade, in a project by Frederico Varandas that, the president of Sporting hopes, can have the same success as the previous one.
